When can a child psychologist help?

A child psychologist can help when emotions, behaviour, anxiety, adjustment, relationships or developmental differences are affecting a child's wellbeing or participation in everyday life.

Psychological support can also help parents and carers understand what may be contributing to a child's distress or behaviour and develop practical, evidence-based strategies.

Reasons families and referrers may seek psychology support

A referral may be considered when a child:

  • experiences persistent anxiety, worries or fears
  • has difficulty with emotional regulation
  • shows behaviour that is causing distress or significantly affecting daily life
  • is struggling with transitions or major changes
  • needs support with confidence or coping skills
  • is having difficulty participating socially
  • has developmental delay or autism and psychological support is relevant to their goals
  • has sleep, routine or adjustment difficulties where psychological factors may be involved
  • needs support following stressful experiences
  • would benefit from parent or caregiver strategies as part of a broader plan

Urgent mental health or safety concerns require appropriate emergency, crisis or specialist mental health pathways rather than a general provider directory.

What can child psychology support involve?

Emotional regulation

Helping children and families recognise emotional patterns, build coping strategies and respond to difficult situations.

Anxiety and fears

Evidence-based approaches can help children gradually develop skills to manage anxiety and participate more confidently in everyday activities.

Behaviour and family support

A psychologist may work with the child, parents or both to understand what is happening around behaviour and build practical strategies.

Adjustment and transitions

Support can be useful during changes such as starting school, family changes, moving environments or adapting to new developmental demands.

Developmental support

Psychologists may contribute to assessment, formulation, goal setting and therapeutic support when developmental differences affect a child's participation or wellbeing.

Where is child psychology delivered?

Depending on the practice, psychology may be offered through:

  • clinics
  • telehealth
  • schools
  • preschool or kindergarten
  • community settings
  • multidisciplinary child development services

Some services work mainly with the child. Others place strong emphasis on parent coaching, family work or collaboration with educators and other professionals.

For families: choosing psychology support

Consider whether the provider:

  • works with the child's age group
  • has experience relevant to the concern
  • offers parent or caregiver involvement where useful
  • provides the preferred location or telehealth option
  • works collaboratively with schools or other clinicians when appropriate
  • explains fees, referral requirements and wait times clearly
  • has an approach that is child-centred, family-centred and respectful of neurodiversity

If you are unsure whether psychology is the right next step, a GP, child and family health nurse or other trusted professional may help clarify suitable pathways.

For referrers

A strong referral should explain:

  • the main concern
  • how long it has been present
  • how it affects the child's daily functioning
  • relevant family priorities
  • any safety or urgency concerns
  • other services involved
  • previous assessments or supports, if relevant

Avoid relying only on broad labels. Functional information helps providers judge whether they are the right fit.

Psychology and Thriving Kids NSW

National Thriving Kids guidance identifies psychology among the allied health disciplines that may contribute to targeted supports.

NSW says targeted supports are planned to begin from January 2027 and will include allied health therapies delivered by qualified clinicians. The final mix of commissioned services, intake pathways and private provider participation continues to develop.

For the latest official program information, see the NSW Department of Communities and Justice Thriving Kids page.

Psychology practice readiness for Thriving Kids

Thriving Kids is creating a new early-support environment around children with developmental delay and autism. NSW has confirmed allied health within targeted supports and is exploring private allied health participation options.

Psychology practices serving young children can prepare by clarifying their paediatric scope, referral pathways, geographic coverage, capacity, collaborative service model and website content.

Participation in government-funded Thriving Kids delivery will depend on official NSW arrangements.
